What are capping machines?

Capping machines are designed to fix a plastic or foil cap to an existing container. Typically, capping machines are the second step of the production line process. There are both automated and manual benchtop style capping machines, both of which work on the same principle.

After a container is filled, it needs to go through the capping process. It is essential for the container to be capped before moving to the next stage of production.

How do capping machines work?

Capping machines work by spinning or rotating a cap onto a container, and tightening it up to a set torque.

Different types of capping machine work differently, though with the same main objective of securing the cap to the product.

For example, Roll-on Pilfer Proof (ROPP) capers work by forming an aluminium foil cap into the thread of the glass (e.g. a wine bottle or soft drink bottle).

What are the different types of capping machines?

At Rentafill, we offer three different style of capping machines.

Standard Capper

Standard cappers grab hold of the cap by means of a rubber chuck, and spins it down to a set torque. Designed to screw pre-threaded including tamper evident caps on to a verity of containers.

Trigger Capper

This type of capper is designed to accommodate trigger or pump style caps (e.g. Spray and wipe containers) and where a standard chuck capper is not suitable. Trigger cappers work by spinning the cap with four wheels, comes in around the side of the neck of the container and secures the cap to a set torque.

ROPP Capper

Roll-on Pilfer Proof (ROPP) is a type of screw cap where the thread is formed as the cap is applied to the bottle via the capping machine. (ROPP) caps are generally made from aluminium. ROPP Cappers are commonly used for soft drink, olive oil and wine bottles.

The type of capping machine best suited to you will depend on the type of product you are producing.

How do I choose which capping machine I need?

This depends on the type of capping you require for your product.

An important consideration is understanding the scope of your project’s needs before deciding which capping machine is most suitable.

If you’re not sure, you can be guided by answers to these questions:

    • What type of product am I filling? Is it glass or plastic?
    • What type of cap? Is it pre-threaded of foil, trigger or pump?
    • Does the machine need to be integrated within a production line?
